Dr. K, as many of us know her by, agreed to answer a few questions as the first HNFS professor to be featured on the “Bio Board”.
From what college did you graduate? BS in Biology from a small college in Pennsylvania called Muhlenberg, Masters Degree in Public Health Nutrition with a coordinated RD from Univ. of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Doctorate in Public Health with a concentration in Maternal and Child Health from the School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University
How long have you been teaching at Cal Poly? 5 years; before that-
Was an adjunct faculty at the Univ. of Vienna in Austria from 2003-2006
Assistant Professor in Larnaca, Cyprus from 2000-2003
Director of Health Education for the King Fahd Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia from 1998-2000
Dean of Students for the American University in Dubai from 1997-1998
Assistant Professor at Morgan State University in Maryland from 1994-1996
Who is your role model or mentor, either past or present, and why? Mildred Kaufman, MS, RD who was the director of my MPH/RD program and taught me so much about Community Nutrition
David Paige, MD who was my Doctoral thesis advisor who sometimes drove me crazy, but I learned a lot!
My hope is to give back to my students some of what these two gave to me with their time and their commitment and caring for their students and for the community
What is your favorite food: brownies
How can students impress you? Or rather, what makes a good student? Someone who tries their best
What do you think is the most important part of succeeding at Cal Poly (meaning to graduate, get an internship, land a job, etc.)? Learning how to effectively juggle all one’s responsibilities and earning a high gpa while obtaining good volunteer experience
